Von einem Standpunkt auf den zerklüfteten Felsen des Vordergrundes blicken die Betrachter:innen hinab in eine weite und flache Ebene. Das Tal der Lauchert, ein Nebenfluss der Donau, liegt still und friedlich da. Der Fluss schlängelt sich wie die schmalen Pfade sanft durch die Felder. Ein kleines Dorf fügt sich nahezu unbemerkt in die sonst menschenleere Landschaft. Helles Sonnenlicht taucht das von dicht bewachsenen Hügeln umsäumte Tal in warme Farben. Rudolf Schlichter nimmt sich in den 1930er Jahren häufig die Landschaften der Schwäbischen Alb zum Thema. Die Gegend ist für ihn ab 1933 auch ein wichtiger Rückzugsort vor der Kontrolle durch das NS-Regime. Anfang der 1930er Jahre äußert sich der Künstler stark antisemitisch und völkisch-nationalistisch. Er steht dem Kreis um den Schriftsteller Ernst Jünger (1895–1998) nahe. Auch hofft er auf Anerkennung durch die Nationalsozialisten. Doch eckt er aufgrund seiner privaten Lebensführung beim NS-Regime an und wird kurzzeitig inhaftiert. In seiner Malerei verstärkt er in dieser Zeit Bezüge zu altmeisterlichen Stilen. Möglicherweise liegt darin auch ein Versuch, sich der NS-Kunstbürokratie für anschlussfähig zu zeigen. Er verschreibt sich einer selbst definierten Form des Realismus. Doch sind seine Landschaftsdarstellungen keineswegs naturgetreu. Er stilisiert sie vielmehr zu Ideallandschaften. Manche wirken dabei steril und unbelebt. Auf diese Weise kippt die von Schlichter angestrebte harmonische Wirkung in eine unwirkliche, beinahe postapokalyptische Atmosphäre.
