Jakobs Kampf mit dem Engel ist in Otto Dix‘ Gemälde vor allem das Ringen farblicher Intensitäten miteinander. Jakobs tiefes Rot steht für dessen wütende und kraftvolle Anstrengungen gegen den geflügelten Himmelsboten. Der Engel als nicht-weltliches Wesen scheint dagegen in Flammen zu stehen, als wollte er auf diese Weise Jakob an der Berührung hindern. Die Intensität ihres Kampfes auf dem Berg verfärbt auch den Himmel in glühenden Tönen. Der Kampf ist in die biblische Geschichte vom Bruderstreit zwischen Jakob und Esau eingebettet. Jakob braucht vom Engel den göttlichen Segen, um sich mit seinem Bruder Esau versöhnen zu können. Mit einer List hatte der jüngere Zwillingsbruder Jakob den älteren Bruder um das Recht und den Segen des Erstgeborenen gebracht. Jakobs Kampf mit dem Engel ist in der Geschichte nur eine Nebenszene. Auf Grund ihrer Drastik wird sie jedoch seit dem Mittelalter häufig zum Bildthema. Wie viele moderne Künstler setzt sich auch Dix intensiv mit den Geschichten der Bibel auseinander. Vor allem in der Zeit der NS-Diktatur überträgt er Partien als Gleichnisse auf seine eigene Gegenwart. Mit den alten Sinnbildern bezieht er Stellung zum aktuellen Zeitgeschehen. Doch sind diese Kommentare nie plakativ oder eindeutig zu entziffern.
