Otto Dix‘ Hauptgegenstand im hier gezeigten Landschaftsgemälde ist weniger das titelgebende, sich in die Tiefe erstreckende Tal, sondern mehr der mächtige Berg im Vordergrund. Er ist eine bizarre Felsformation mit nach oben hin immer karger werdenden Vegetation und einem Gletscher. Dieser bedeckt den Bergrücken vollständig und durchzieht in schmalen Fäden die zerfurchte Talseite. So erhält der Berg fast wesenhafte Züge. Sie lassen ihn wie ein Ungeheuer erscheinen. Auch die düstere Wolkendecke, die heraufzieht, trägt zur unheimlichen Atmosphäre bei. Während der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus richtet Dix seine Aufmerksamkeit auf altmeisterlich ausgeführte Landschaftsbilder. Sie schildern oftmals eine sich in der Natur abspielende Dramatik. Zugleich enthalten sie zahlreiche Bezüge zur spätmittelalterlichen und frühneuzeitlichen Landschaftsmalerei, die im Südwesten Deutschlands ein Zentrum hatte. Bei den Gemälden mit Landschaften aus dem Riesengebirge handelt es sich um Auftragsarbeiten. Die wichtigsten Werke der Serie hat der Künstler wahrscheinlich aber für sich behalten.
